Description

It's refreshing to see such wide-ranging operating system support for a non-Raspberry Pi board. The main area most competing SBCs suffer is support and community. The Libre Computer community delivers loads of OSes ranging from Linux to Android. There's a distro perfect for everything from a basic desktop to a server, HTPC, and game console. On a basic level, it achieves this by modifying the files within the Raspberry Pi OS microSD card to include the necessary files to boot your Libre Computer SBC from the same OS image. cmdline.txt does not change kernel parameters! You need to follow normal Linux distro instructions and update /etc/default/grub and then run update-grub.

The only thing I’d say about there being fewer support resources is that people said the same thing about the Pi when I wrote some of those very resources they take for granted now on the Pi years ago. It was considered a toy and a joke and people didn’t take it seriously (and got left behind like usual in technology because the technology will move forward whether people accept it or not). I’ll get to more extensive testing in the near future, however, at this time I’ve been able to confirm everything I’d initially expected to work, did (except the ones noted toward the beginning of this post). Does raspi-config still work? Raspberry Pi 4 has been released and it’s going to solve all the performance woes you had with Raspberry Pi 3. The Raspberry Pi 4 is not just an incremental upgrade but brings a whole new powerful processor, more RAM, and a multitude of ports. Still, I'd highly encourage Libre Computer Renegade adoption. Though the Raspberry Pi 3 wins the match up, the ROC-RK3328-CC is a more than competent board which largely holds its own. With 4K output, it's a nifty little multimedia device. Plus, the Libre Computer Renegade functions well for network attached storage (NAS) purposes either with OpenMediaVault or a roll-your-own server build. The Android ecosystem touts versatile characteristics on phones, tablets, and set-topboxes such as the Nvidia Shield TV. However, while most of these devices come with Android pre-installed, you may also create a do-it-yourself (DIY) Android PC. The Libre Computer ROC-RK3328-CC single-board computer (SBC) boasts a small footprint and low power-draw plus wide-ranging operating system (OS) compatibility. With its Android compatibility, the Libre Computer Renegade makes for a solid Android foundation. Learn how to make a Libre Computer ROC-RK3328-CC Renegade Android 7 desktop! What is the Libre Computer Renegade?Running OpenMediaVault on the Libre Computer ROC-Rk3328-CC requires a few items. First, you'll need a Libre Computer Renegade board, microSD card, 5V 2.5A micro USB power supply, image mounting software such as Etcher, and extraction software like 7Zip. A case is optional but recommended. a. If you followed steps 1 through 5 correctly, the board should boot up. LEDs on the board will change if the bootloader is successfully loaded from the storage medium. a. Make sure the storage medium is not damaged. MicroSD cards can break if the board is installed or removed from cases without removing the card first. Hair-line fractures will cause short-circuit so do not try to use them if you notice any fractures or damage! Short-circuit can cause the card to get really hot and burn your skin. OpenMediaVault or OMV, is a Linux-based OS designed for network attached storage (NAS) use. Onboard, you'll find a bevy of features for creating a DIY NAS box. For instance, Watchdog, Syslog, S.M.A.R.T., and SNMP for monitoring, RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, and JBOD, plus protocols like FTP, NFS, CIFS through Samba.

The Libre Computer board ROC-RK3328 features excellent operating system support. Among the many Libre Computer Renegade OSes, you'll find a Libre Computer Android 7.1 image, several Linux distributions for the ROC-RK2238-CC, and OpenMediaVault for a lightweight media server. The second point involves closed source components of the Raspberry Pi related to hardware. If you are using any hardware that makes use of these closed-source Raspberry Pi hardware features that isn’t supported. This is essentially true with every competing board to the Raspberry Pi due to the closed-source nature of these components on the Pi.c. Certain power supplies can cause problems if they exceed 5.5V and cause certain board features to stop working. The board will try to read the bootloader from the eMMC and then the MicroSD card from sector 64 (32KB). If the correct signed bootloader is detected, the board will begin loading it.

Copy-on-write and zstd compressed filesystem (reduces write-amplification and improves MicroSD card life) OpenMediaValut extras include a variety of plugins, both official and third-party offerings. You'll find an OpenMediaVault Plex plugin, Logical Volume Manager (LVM) for creating dynamic partitions, a Sabnzbd plugin, ClamAV antivirus, Transmission and BitTorrent Sync for OpenMediaVault BitTorrent use, Owncloud, and more. Overall, there are loads of OpenMediaVault extras. After that, mount the OMV image to a microSD card with a program like Etcher. When your Libre Computer Renegade OMV OS is properly mounted, pop the microSD card in your Libre Computer ROC Renegade and power on the SBC. OpenMediaVault Libre Computer Renegade Review: A Simple DIY NAS Box Make sure you use proper tools to flash correctly. Incorrect images or incomplete flash will not boot. We recommend running a verify pass to make sure the data is correctly written. Also make sure that the image file matches your board model. On Windows, make sure to show file extensions so you can tell if the file has been decompressed. Flashing a compressed image will not boot. In light of this, I’ll be using the Libre Computer Renegade Elite and the Raspberry Pi 4 as I quite like the idea of doing a comparison of these in the future, and using the same image seems like a good idea! Things to note!It will ask you to type “continue”. Once you type this out it will begin to prepare the image. Testing the Utility At its core, the Libre Computer Raspbian Portability script has been designed to take a Raspbian/Raspberry Pi OS operating system and modify it so that it can be used on a Libre Computer SBC. Type continue to confirm you wish to go ahead and wait a couple of minutes to complete (it may take longer on older, less powerful Raspberry Pis!) Once done, it will ask you to shut down the Pi by pressing any key to confirm.
