About this deal

Excellent! The leather has been cleaned, dyed, and finished, you’re all done! After the finish has dried you can clean up.

Semi-Aniline Finish Leather – Semi-aniline finish leather is aniline dyed or stained using a small quantity of pigment so that the natural characteristics of the hide is visible. This is first saturated in dyes and later on given light coating of dyes and pigments on the surface. The treatment of semi-transparent stains provides protection against fading but do not completely obscure the surface. This type of leather would be considered next to aniline leather. It is then finished with a thin protective coating to help prevent fast wear of the leather, or any other staying or discoloration from showing up on the surface.Generally only higher quality leathers are used since they have nice, even surfaces. This can be a visually appealing dye approach, since it does allow the original surface of the leather to show through. Antique Grain Leather There are many different kinds of leather wax you can get to finish your leather items but I find the adam wax to be one of the best because it’s the pure wax base which is in the recipe for a lot of tanned. It will give you work a nice polish, soften, enrich the dye color and give it a beautiful gloss. Tips on Applying W ax F inish es Once you’ve found a mixture you’re happy with, it’s time to add the Crosslinker Eco. This should be added at a ratio of roughly 1:8. For reference, add 15ml of Crosslinker to 125ml of Finish. The process alters some of the preferred qualities of leather, so while not a top quality, it is often used for belts and similar goods. Split Grain LeatherLeather is a highly durable material made by tanning hide or skin of animals. Animal skin undergoes a preservation process i.e. a chemical treatment called tanning to convert the otherwise perishable skin to a non-decaying material called leather. The way this first method works is that after you have done a bit of leather carving or stamping which results in raised and depressed patterns, apply the cream form of the antique finish only to raised parts of the stamping or carving of the leather leaving the impressed design very light or without any antique finishes. Top Grain – This is the second highest grade of leather after full grain. It is split from the top layer of blemished hide and then it is sanded and refinished to get rid of scars and scrapes. It is still strong and durable. It is mainly used for garment manufacturing. It has greater stain resistance than full grain leather if its finish is maintained. The best way to finish leather is a highly debated subject. While others may perceive polishes or wax finishes as the be best types of leather finish, others may also view oiling, burnishing, lacquering, antique or a combination of any of the above the best type of finish.

Polishing is also a type of finish done at the finishing process of the project. It’s done to make leather articles smooth, shiny, and to look fresh off the box. Polishing is done by applying leather enriching substances which are either in liquid, creamy or solid forms. Because polishing enriches leather products, it can be done several times even after the project has already completed and is in use. Because it undergoes no sanding, the surface can have minor imperfections. These might be from where a cow rubbed up against a fence, a small cut they might have received, or scrapes from everyday life. Full grain hides without many blemishes are the most prized, as they are least common and are the most visually appealing. The above process will have removed the manufacturers finish and any silicones that are soluble in solvents. There are however some silicones like spray on polish and waxes that aren't soluble in solvents, and so to remove these we need to use the Alcohol Cleaner. After using the Leather Prep wipe the leather down with a cloth dampened in the Alcohol Cleaner and for ease of use you could also spray the Alcohol Cleaner directly onto the leather. Now wait 30 minutes for the prep to evaporate. Finishes are the topcoats and the last things you put on your leather to either preserve its dyes or treat the leather. Some finishes are more water-resistant than others.Degrained leather, on the other hand, provides a blank canvas for adding artistic and complicated treatments and embossing leather. Split leather Usually, before applying lacquer finishes, an important tip is to apply a thin coating of liquid wax finish. However, when water-soluble dyes are used prior to lacquering, the result is always awesome. On the other hand, it doesn’t work well with acrylic paint finishes. Once all cleaned up, you can relax and enjoy your newly dyed leather piece 🙂 Popular Leather Dyeing Products

The antique appearance is more vivid when the dark pigmentation layer is uneven. The darker the final result is, the more dark pigment you use, and vice versa. Number one hides are top grade hides. They generally have no major surface imperfections, holes, or cuts. If there are holes approximately 3-4 inches from the edge of the hides, and they can be trimmed away, they won’t affect the overall grade. About 80% of hides shipped to tanners should be a number one grade. Leather Hide Grade – Number TwoChoosing the finish for a new granite countertop may be influenced by the look and how it will affect the richness of the selected color, but it’s also important to consider the maintenance needed for one’s lifestyle. However, not all granite colors can come in a honed or leather finish since the integrity of the slab might be sacrificed due to the amount of minerals in the granite. While there are nearly endless possibilities for dyeing leather, including using natural barks, colorings, and dyes, here are a few of the most popular products that can get you started. Common Leather Cleaners In case you’d want to go with brushing the wax over the surface of the leather item, make sure to use a soft sable brush Many other finishes are available based on preference and the intended use of the leather product. Some will make items waterproof, while other provide very shiny, glossy finishes. Carnauba Wax All in all, I find that the Jojoba oil to be ideal due to its high reputation of being less smelly and not having a too darkened effect on the leather compared to other types of oils.

In general, when speaking about animal leathers, those from larger animals such as cattle are referred to as “hides”. Those from smaller animals such as rabbits or pigs are referred to as skins. Also in terms of volume, cattle leather makes up about 67% of the total annual leather production around the world. Cattle – Bulls There’s a lot of talk on the types of finishes that are best among professionals in the leatherwork fraternity. But to me, a lot of it will come down to personal preference. The belly cut of a leather hide is from the left or right edges of the hide. The belly of animals naturally expands and contracts as food and water are consumed. This makes the belly leather a little softer, and stretchier, than from other areas of the hide. While not considered prime leather, belly cut leather can be used for a variety of leather working uses. Double Belly Leather Cut When manually dyeing a piece darker, it’s usually best to transition through at least two dye colors. This helps the material take the dye better than a straight light-to-dark process.
